Dominant Behavior

Why does my dog show dominant aggression?

In the wild, a dog's world is made up of leaders and followers. Dogs don't feel badly or ashamed about being followers. They are what they are, and they accept their positions within the pack without question.

If your dog is pulling on the leash when you are walking, that could be an indication of dominate behavior.Just as in the human world, there are very few dogs who are natural born leaders. The dominance issues you may be having with your dog are probably due to a programming in his/her brain that tells him/her someone has to lead.

If your dog is demonstrating dominant behavior, then you are NOT sending the message that you are the leader.

Some dogs may be status-seeking individuals, but most are willing to follow as long as the human is a strong leader.

Some dominant behaviors your dog might display include:

  • Jumping on you
  • Becoming possessive over toys
  • Becoming territorial over certain areas of the house
  • Taking over your bed
  • Growling or nipping at you
  • Ignoring your commands
  • Pulling on the leash
  • Walking in front of you

Dominant behavior can lead to aggression.
